Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) refers to a collection of disorders that affect the TMJ, the joint that joins the skull to the jaw. TMJD sufferers often experience pain or discomfort, jaw difficulty, migraines, and earaches. Some of the many causes of TMJD include:

  • Arthritis
  • Teeth grinding
  • Jaw dislocation
  • Bite misalignment
  • Clenching of the jaw
  • Bad posture
  • Stress
  • Disease or illness
  • TMJ or jaw trauma

Many people don’t realize that they are suffering from TMJD because their symptoms may seem unrelated. Symptoms of TMJD may include:

  • Difficulty chewing, closing, and/or opening the mouth
  • Persistent jaw soreness or pain, especially during specific times of day
  • A tooth- or earache not caused by infection or other dental issues
  • Jaw pain when using the mouth
  • A clicking or popping noise when you open or close your mouth
  • A ‘locked’ or stiff jaw when using the mouth
  • Chronic migraines or tension headaches, especially upon waking
  • Recent bite changes

Here at Dr. Orandi’s office, we offer our patients the NTI appliance to help relieve their TMJD-related pain.
